2021 Presidential Inauguration
2021 Presidential Inauguration
January 20, 2021
59th Inauguration Ceremony for the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden and Vice President, Kamala Harris.
The theme, announced prior to the election, is "Our Determined Democracy: Forging a More Perfect Union."
A lighting ceremony honoring American lives lost due to COVID-19 will take place on Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Communities across the country are invited to join by lighting buildings and ringing church bells.
The 46th President of the United States will be sworn in on Wednesday, Jan. 20 on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Both the vice president-elect and president-elect will take Oaths of Office, which usually takes place at noon, followed by an inaugural address. Attendance will be mostly limited to Congress and COVID-19 safety protocols outlined by the inauguration’s chief medical adviser.
Instead of a traditional inaugural parade, the Bidens will arrive at the White House with a presidential escort consisting of representatives from every branch of the military. Biden will also receive a presidential escort from 15th Street to the White House, "providing the American people and world with historic images of the President-elect proceeding to the White House without attracting large crowds and gatherings."
A “virtual parade” showcasing communities across the country will be televised. Resource
There may be a second round of celebrations. James Clyburn, House Majority Whip and chair of Biden's inaugural committee, has told CNN that it was possible more celebrations would be planned for the summer, when the threat of the pandemic might be less salient—perhaps near July 4th. "Hopefully, things will be under control then," he said. Resource
