Heritage Spotlight: Behind The Beat
Heritage Spotlight: Behind The Beat
April 1, 2021 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
This presentation uses music to explore African American history, from the African beats to the jazz of the Harlem Renaissance to the popular music of the Civil Rights movement. The influences of traditional African music can be seen in the spirituals sung by African Americans while they were enslaved, elements of spirituals can be found in the blues, the blues led the way to jazz, and jazz spurred on R&B, rock and roll, hip hop, and other forms of modern music. Each musical style has ties to history, such as jazz and the Harlem Renaissance or Motown and the Civil Rights Movement. To understand history, you just have to look Behind the Beat!

Join the African American Museum of Iowa for a book talk with Dr. Frederick W. Gooding, Jr. on April 15th, just in time for the 2021 Oscars, scheduled for April 25th! / Frederick W. Gooding, Jr. (PhD, Georgetown University) is an Associate Professor within the John V. Roach Honors College at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. Gooding critically analyzes race within mainstream media, effectively contextualizing problematic patterns based upon their historical roots. As such, Gooding’s best-known work thus far is “You Mean, There’s RACE in My Movie? The Complete Guide to Understanding Race in Mainstream Hollywood,” which has been utilized in high schools and universities nationwide. Also the co-editor of “Stories from the Front of the Room: How Higher Education Faculty Overcome Challenges and Thrive in the Academy,” Gooding has stayed focused on the practical applications of equity with his 2018 book, “American Dream Deferred” carefully detailing the growth and struggles of black federal workers in the postwar era. / His latest work, Black Oscars: From Mammy to Minny, What the Academy Awards Tell Us about African Americans, expands his reach into cultural studies by analyzing African American Academy Award winners and how their narratives reflect and reinforce larger American history. Rather than merely chronicle Black Academy Award winners, this manuscript offers a critical and complete analysis of the various nominated and winning roles for Black actors since the Academy’s inception and thus provides a framework to help readers re-assess not just the quantity, but the quality of Black images over time.
