As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz, he also developed new approaches on his own recordings. In the 1970s—with record-breaking albums like Head Hunters—he combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. Future Shock, which included the landmark hit “Rockit,” marked Hancock's foray into electronic dance sounds. During the same period he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P. Hancock has collected 14 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award across his astonishing career. Hancock, who hails from Chicago and who attended Grinnell (Iowa) College, will perform music highlighting the acoustic and the electronic paths he has charted over the years. She is working toward a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins. Pitchfork says, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration,” and Smithsonian Magazine calls her “an electrifying artist who brings alive the memories of forgotten predecessors, white and black.” Hancher audiences first met her as co-founder of the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. Since 2020, she has been the artistic director of the famed Silkroad Ensemble, succeeding Yo-Yo Ma in that role. Her new television series, My Music with Rhiannon Giddens, airs on PBS and features musical performances and conversations with outstanding guest artists filmed on location around the South. She returns to Iowa City fronting a full band in support of her recent Nonesuch release You’re the One, the follow-up to her Grammy-winning They’re Calling Me Home. At Notre Dame, he led the school's storied football program to the 1966 national championship. He was a first-round draft choice of the Minnesota Vikings in 1967. During his career for the Vikings and Chicago Bears, he played in 218 consecutive games, earning All-Pro honors six times, and was voted to nine consecutive Pro Bowls. In 1971 he was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player, becoming only the second defensive player in history to be so named. In 1988, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; in 1993 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He sought election to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1992 and won, becoming the first African American on the court and one of the few associate justices ever to join the court initially through election, rather than appointment by governor. He was reelected in 1988, becoming the biggest vote-getter in Minnesota history. He served until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 in 2015. In 2018, Alan Page was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
